International Day of the Fisherman is celebrated annually on June 29th, to honour the sacrifices and hard work of fishers and aquaculturalists worldwide.  

As Australia's Home of Seafood, Sydney Fish Market has a close relationship with our suppliers, and we understand the immense effort and dedication that goes into providing us Aussies with the fresh, delicious seafood we know and love. In this article, we want to take the opportunity to celebrate International Day of the Fisherman and recognise the critical role that fishers and aquaculturalists play in our industry. 

Fishers and aquaculturalists face numerous challenges: think fluctuating market demands, inclement and dangerous weather conditions, and high operating costs, just to name a few.  

Our suppliers – whether they are wild-catch fishers or aquaculturalists, trawling or trapping, hand-harvesting or longlining – are critical to our industry's success. They work long hours, often at great personal risk, to bring us the freshest seafood possible.  

Australia's fishers are also passionate about protecting the marine environment. The industry recognises that we all have a responsibility to protect the ocean and its resources, not least to ensure consistent seafood supply for many years to come.  

Sydney Fish Market works with our suppliers to ensure that the whole industry is adhering to sustainable fishing practices, and we bet if you ask, you'll find that fishers are the most vocal advocates for responsible sourcing, reducing the industry's environmental impacts, and strict, evidence-based fisheries management.
