In celebration of World Fisheries Day (November 21), Sydney Fish Market is once again pleased to announce the opening of applications for its annual Environmental Grant.
With a commitment to maintaining the ongoing sustainability and viability of the Australian seafood industry, Sydney Fish Market understands that cost can often be a barrier for fishers and aquaculturalists seeking to reduce the impact of their activities on the environment.
The annual grant of up to AU$10,000 recognises an individual or group of primary seafood producers seeking to improve their environmental practices and provides an opportunity for them to continue developing their initiative to support the future of the industry.
Successful applications may suggest a change to fishing methods or equipment that reduces impacts on the marine environment or reduces by-catch; or improvements to facilities to reduce the use of water, power, or plastic, or to reduce carbon emissions.
Sydney Fish Market CEO Greg Dyer said: “Sydney Fish Market is focused on maintaining and preserving our fisheries for future generations. We’re proud to be awarding our Environmental Grant once again in 2023.
“Australia is considered a world leader in fisheries management and the Commonwealth has declared sustainable seas here for close to 10 consecutive years. We hope this program continues to encourage improved environmental practice and initiatives amongst our seafood suppliers and the industry as a whole.”
To be considered for the Environmental Grant, applicants are asked to highlight how their project will have a positive impact on the environment via the downloadable application form here.
One of last year’s grant recipients, Barnes Seafood, invested the funds in research to find an alternative liner to replace the plastic version currently used to seal and cover fish bins for transportation.
“The current products used in the industry are mostly plastic and can impact the environment. We were thrilled to win the grant to fund our exploration and implementation of sustainable solutions,” said Angela Barnes.
“Our hope is to eventually find a convenient, biodegradable wrapping method that would remove the need for plastic altogether. Securing the Environmental Grant gave us the opportunity to set up a trial for alternate methods to make real change in our industry.”
Applications for the grant close on Tuesday October 31st, 2023. A selection panel comprised of Sydney Fish Market and industry representatives will select the winner(s) based on answers provided in the application. The winner(s) of the grant will be announced on World Fisheries Day.
Celebrated on 21st November each year, World Fisheries Day brings together fishing communities and highlights the ongoing innovation and hardworking people that ensure a sustainable seafood supply for future generations.
