For first time visitors, Sydney Fish Market can be a whirlwind of sights, sounds, and flavours. With such a huge variety of fresh seafood, hot dishes, and sweet treats available, it can be hard to know where to start.
There are a few dishes on our retailers' menus that have held the coveted spots of 'most popular' at the Market for a long time now. Whether you're looking to tuck into a heaped platter of fried fish, or pair your Snapper with a Semillon, we think you need to try at least one of these famous classics on your next visit.
Aburi Scallops
Available at every hot foot retailer, these bite-sized snacks are a mouthwatering combination of fresh scallop meat, sushi rice, sweet soy sauce, and melted cheese.
The most popular spot at the Market to get your hands on these is the Aburi bar at Peters Sydney Fish Market, located in the main arcade. At this unassuming little stall, they are blowtorched fresh to order, earning a line around the block on busy days.
Bonus tip: grab a Lobster Roll too. You won't regret it!
Lobster Noodles
A dish entirely unique to Sydney Fish Market, lobster noodles are a must-try. What makes this special is that you can have it prepared fresh to order, by choosing your crustacean from the live tanks and asking to have it cooked in your choice of sauce, before being served on a bed of noodles.
This is a great option if you're visiting the Market with the whole family or a big group of friends, as the servings are always plentiful.
Available at Christie's Seafood, Peters Sydney Fish Market, and Nicholas Seafoods.
Fresh Sashimi
Sydney Fish Market is undoubtably the best place in Sydney to get your hands on fresh sashimi. Almost every retailer has a dedicated sashimi bar, at which you can pick and choose from the most diverse selection of sashimi available anywhere in the city!
Create your own bento box from salmon, tuna, kingfish, snapper, abalone, scallops, octopus, and so much more, all sliced by the experts to your exact specifications, and served with soy sauce and wasabi.
Fish and Chips
Fish and chips are a classic at any waterfront location in Australia, and Sydney Fish Market is no different. However, as you might expect, our retailers put a lot of effort into making sure the fish and chips they serve are world class.
One way to take this classic to the next level is to try a whole fish with your chips. Barramundi, snapper, and trout are just a few of the species options available to be served this way, pan-fried, deep-fried, or steamed.
Oysters
One of Australia's favourite types of seafood, oysters abound at Sydney Fish Market, in every variety and size under the sun. If you're a purist, you can enjoy them just as they are, with a squeeze of lemon. If you'd like something a little different, many retailers at the Market also sell smaller trays adorned with a range of delicious toppings, like seaweed salad, fish eggs, and spicy soy-based dressings.
Our top tip for enjoying oysters at the Market is to ask the oyster shucker working that day what they recommend; they know their stuff, and will always point you towards the freshest and tastiest batch!
Prawns
A visit to Sydney Fish Market wouldn't be complete without eating a prawn or two. There are so many different ways to enjoy prawns at the Market, but the simplest is to purchase a kilo from a retailer and enjoy them on our sunny boardwalk with a simple squeeze of lemon. This way, the whole family can dig in, and you can get some peeling practice in before Christmas!
If you prefer your prawns a little more dressed up, you can't go wrong with a prawn skewer from one of the hot foot retailers. Slathered in zingy Asian flavours and grilled to perfection, a prawn skewer is easy to eat on the go, and too tasty for words.
