Macular Disease (MD), previously called Macular Degeneration, is Australia’s leading cause of blindness. MD affects one in every seven Australians over the age of 50 and the incidence increases with age. The disease causes progressive damage to the macula resulting in central vision loss. There are three major risk factors for MD – age (those over the age of 50 are most at risk), smoking and genetics.
Research has shown that regular consumption of omega 3 fatty acids found in foods such as fish can reduce the risk of developing MD. The MD Foundation encourages people to eat fish regularly to ensure that their intake of Omega 3 is adequate.
